GREAT IS THE LORD

You might call it a chance ‘sighting’ when Michael W. Smith saw Debbie Davis walk by in the hallway outside the office he was sitting in at a Nashville recording company.

Michael quickly learned her name and found her again in the building.  They began dating, were engaged in 3 ½ weeks and married four months afterwards.  Little did either of them know how God would use them to be leaders in writing Christ honouring worship music that has led many in praise to God all over the world.

While they were engaged to be married in 1982, they became inspired by the scripture passage, Psalm 145:3 where it says, “Great is the Lord and most worthy of Praise!”  As often was the case, Debbie immediately wrote the lyrics and Michael composed the music.  A new song was born!

Michael often led worship at their church in Nashville and that Sunday, he taught them this new song.  Michael and Debbie became overwhelmed as the congregation seemed greatly moved towards a spirit of worship as they sang.

God is above all!  Great is the Lord and worthy of praise!  Let me repeat…He is WORTHY of praise!  Their song…GREAT IS THE LORD!
