The hymn, I WILL RISE, was written by Chris Tomlin in collaboration with Louie Giglio, the founder of Passion Conferences, a Christian organization committed to spreading the fame of Jesus Christ to college students.
At the age of 11 Chris contracted mononucleosis and was bed ridden for a time. His father brought him a guitar during this time and Chris learned to play while listening to Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. He wrote his first worship song at 14 years old and has been a worship leader all of his adult life. He released his first album in 1995 and went on to release many others in the following years. With so many of his award-winning worship songs being used today, Chris has been named as one of the most sung artists in the world.
One day over lunch, Chris and Louie were discussing how to support those who were going through a sorrow due to the loss of loved ones. “Jesus has overcome…and the grave is overwhelmed” were words in their conversation that made an impact on Chris Tomlin. With this inspiration, the song ‘I Will Rise’ was composed and has brought many encouragement. The grave has no power since Jesus has overcome it.
