There are many reasons to write a song. So often, the lyrics and music will flow from an experience of life or an inspiration from God as He reveals Himself to the composer. Sometimes this inspiration comes in a unique way and for a unique purpose!. Our story today is one of those stories for sure!!
William Kirkpatrick was the minister of music at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia; he was also a popular musician on the summer Camp Revival Meeting circuit.
On one occasion in the early 1890’s, as Kirkpatrick led singing at a camp outside of Rawlinsville, Pennsylvania, he began to question the sincerity and salvation of the soloist with whom he was working. The man always left the meeting immediately after he had sung, and he withdrew from fellowship times. The name of the singer has not been recorded so we do not know who it was.
Kirkpatrick was burdened for this musician…and the Lord led him to an unusual plan. The Lord inspired him to write a special song of invitation with just the singer in mind, and then have him sing it. He wrote the song and asked the singer to present it during those meetings. God so spoke to the singer’s heart profoundly as he sang the new song. That evening, he did not leave the service. In fact, the singer was the first one to the Altar at the invitation to receive God’s redemption and salvation. He asked Christ to be Lord of his life…Praise God!
The song of invitation that William Kirkpatrick wrote was, LORD, I’M COMING HOME. This could be your invitation today too.
