Phillips Brooks, was one of Americas outstanding preachers. In fact, in his day, he was often referred to as the “Prince of the Pulpit.” His many published volumes of sermons have since become classics. He won the hearts of people with his preaching and writings.
Brooks, penned the text for the carol, O LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM, in 1868, several years after he returned from spending Christmas eve in Bethlehem. That experience of worshipping in the Church of the Nativity made an indelible impression upon the young preacher. His motive for writing the text was to have a new and simple song that the Sunday School children could sing in their Christmas program.
Lewis Redner, the church organist was provided the text and asked to prepare a simple tune for the children. The music did not come at first…but just in time he was awakened from his sleep with a tune that was considered a gift from heaven!
The new carol became an immediate favourite with the children. It remains a favourite amongst our churches even now. It tells of the wondrous gift of salvation given that first Christmas in Bethlehem as promised!
