Our hymn today, like many other hymns known as ‘invitational’ hymns, owe their recognition and appearance in our song books to the revival meetings of Dwight L. Moody and Ira D. Sankey. These hymns were an essential part of the revival experience. Following the powerful sermon of the evangelist, D. L. Moody, the invitational song became the vehicle that encouraged the attendees to contemplate the message and respond to the gospel.
John Stockton was born in 1813 to Presbyterian parents. In his early 20’s, while attending a camp meeting, John was converted to Methodism. He became a licensed preacher in 1844 and a member of the New Jersey Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was active in ministry not only as a preacher but also as a musician, song composer and hymn writer.
Ill health caused him to withdraw from active pastoral ministry in 1874, at which time he began to compile and publish gospel hymn books. It was at this same time that Stockton worked with Moody and Sankey in their 1874 meetings in Philadelphia. He wrote several songs for use in these revival meetings including our hymn today, ONLY TRUST HIM. John Stockton was to suddenly pass away only 3 years later.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” John Stockton says, “Only trust Him now” …for…”He will save you now.”
