Born on December 14, 1836, in England, Frances Havergal would later become referred to as “the consecration poet.” At the age of 4 she began reading and memorizing the Bible. At the age of 7 she was already writing her thought in verse. Her father, an influential Anglican clergyman, greatly encouraged Francis. During her life she was frail with a delicate health, yet she was an avid student, writer and composer.
After her conversion experience she later wrote, “There and then I committed my soul to the Saviour….and earth and heaven seemed bright from that moment.”
While Francis was writing her many fine hymns in England, Fanny Crosby, America’s blind poetess, was also enriching lives with her writings. Although they never met, each was an ardent admirer of the other.
At the age of 42, her physician told Francis that due to a serious health condition, she did not have long to live. She confidently replied, “If I am really going, it is too good to be true!” Her hymn today, TAKE MY LIFE & LET IT BE, was her lifelong commitment to Jesus Christ…and it can be ours also today.
