THE SOLID ROCK

It seems that many believe there is something they can do to earn salvation and eternal life after physical death. Yet when you come to an understanding of God, who is just in His promised judgement but He is also loving in His provision of redemption, you will realize that we have already failed to earn salvation. We certainly hope there is another way! The wonderful news is that there is another way...provided graciously by the One who alone was able. The hymn, THE SOLID ROCK, written by Edward Mote in 1834, explains this way.
Edward, was born to very poor and ungodly parents. They were keepers of an inn, or as some called it, a public house in London. In writing about his youth, Mote says, “My Sundays were spent in the streets. So ignorant was I that I did not know that there was a God.” The school he attended did not even allow a Bible to be seen, let alone taught.
Edward apprenticed as a cabinetmaker in his youth. One evening when he was sixteen, his master took him to hear the esteemed preacher, John Hyatt. Mote was genuinely converted to Jesus Christ.
He was very successful as a cabinetmaker,.. yet God called him to spend the last 26 years of his life preaching the gospel message so that others had the opportunity to hear of the hope and love freely provided to all by God. He wrote over 100 hymns throughout his lifetime. THE SOLID ROCK still remains in hymnbooks today.
